Approach Control

In our hearts it’s all radioed in
By two tower controllers

Who used to laugh
& sling luggage tagged for Fairbanks
To Melbourne but now they
Guide the plane
In a gentle, L-shaped approach over
The mercury lake

Where we live & sting.

We unload
Deer carcasses from the DPW
For the winter eagles, who cannot know
The fish are poisoned.

They’re fishing where
There should be ice but
The wastewater plant

Has pulled it open
Like curtains
On an unwritten aria.
