A Somber Heart

It’s difficult to rouse a somber heart;
one needs more than water buckets.
One needs a little light, of the right sort,
and love, of the right sort, and one
last thing is what I’d say if somber hearts
made lists of what they need from us.
No, it’s difficult to rouse a somber heart.
Because no one can tell you why,
because no one can say so, or scream it
better, lighter. For further, deeper down
lies our sorrow’s root, beneath all thought.
It’s not a love or knowledge that it lacks.
But lack itself that lived before the heart
was called forth, from mud to sorrow,
was called forth at all, to fill what void?
