Solar Eclipse
I felt it like a fever
not just the heat, but
the shimmer of my
sundress and the
taste of the berries
and the cool, cracking
crunch of icy water.
I couldn’t hold it tight
enough, couldn’t grasp
its slippery molten tail
of copper cornfield summer.
While I danced without
my shadow, a cloud stole
in and claimed the juicy
bite of state fair night
and we fled for separate
caves, hoarding the waning
bright of fireflies. Mercury
washed the heated sky, cooled
the canvas velvet blue.
The memory of summer
slips of the skin and weighs
nothing at all next to a clear
crystal snowflake.
