covered with bright blue jellyfish—tiny
with clear tops that act as sails. Dan said
El Niño or too much wind set them
off course and so they’re landing on west
coast beaches by the millions. An entire
species dead at our feet, painting a
brilliant abstract. Yesterday the dog tried
to eat one, surrounded it with her mouth
and fought not to let go. It crunched hard on
her teeth like a biscuit. Later I read that
sand fleas are really jellyfish eggs
embedded in your skin and I wondered
if the dog’s tongue would itch that night, if
she’d become a sea life incubator.
