A Final Gift

How quickly taunts and threats can escalate
To punches, kicking, shooting, “Help!” Too late:
Blood trickles from a corpse to gutter grate.
On stream of alcohol and meth adrift
To gurney placed in ambulance, free lift
In ambulance to morgue, a final gift.
A midnight sidewalk brawl, another murder.
Soon, workday: blare of horns, clang of girder.
