of course she is afraid

gentleman and ladies hunt
like bears for salmon on steps
where the river meets the sea in Alaska,
eat only the skin, leave the flesh for the birds

with attachment comes little chats across the table,
uglier some dawns than by the easy nights
across the eggs or cereal or thick coffee,
sometimes dumplings, sometimes nothing

she says why don't you stay awhile

she says I’ve a bet to place

he says you look afraid
