Nominal Nocturne
Awkward additions
etched into benches
scrawled onto stall walls,
bent on an always,
couplings meant
to cast a sure spell
over forever and forever
as if teenage talisman
or adolescent amulet
might overpower
oak roots and earthquakes,
city planners,
higher powers,
time, or even
the raccoon that jumped
from the dumpsters
the night before
the sidewalk's wet cement
set to sure
concrete, onto
and through
our initials and down
to the creek to wash
his hands of us.
