Study Under Fire

On one side only, even in the fog
the color seems conferred
by some sunset-nostalgic
spray-paint specialist.

The color seems applied
in 3-D, but on one side only, like
a love.  Directional affection,
from the sun’s southwest the year

entire.  Those who believe
the tree gives rise to all this fire—
who grow ecstatic when they see
a shining so requited—

love a nature of their own.
The tree may brighten on one
side, and for a while, but then
with a reflexive tremor will recall

the ends of time, and shed the whole
shebang—next week, next month and half
of every life, it will be down (like us) to only
air and bare bone.

Unforgettable. And I am lead around, as in the last stanza, to read more (into it), and to read more. Thank you.
