Before You Were Born

Right before you were born

I couldn’t write a thing,

thought I saw death.  Decided

I had already

pickled my liver, was fully concerned

with the hypoth-ogy – the floating oracle-tory –

saw and heard finality in everything.  Time   spent    here

               just a ruse.  A glitch

in the main act, the void, parcels

of futility

divvied out, obsequiously

for that one shot          done                deal.  But then the light

bends in

and I know

that I am waiting, and what was once

a mere intellectual exercise, steps in – un-      and      a-         bound, serenading

me, obsequiously! at the collar of my new serendipity, yes this tall man

dressed in thistledown.
