They managed

to stoke

 

racism against

Michael Dukakis, who was

 

likely

not even an anti-racist, with the

 

whole Willie Horton fiasco.  They will try

to do the same thing with Joe Biden and socialism.

 

They might succeed.  It’s a bitter irony.  Joe Biden, dik-dik

of neoliberal politics, who himself has built a career out of a

 

patented fear of socialism.  Maybe he shouldn’t have stoked those fires.

Maybe Dukakis should have been more anti-racist running against a black man.

 

It strikes me that, counterintuitively, Jesse Jackson would’ve made a harder target

for race-baiting, and Bernie Sanders, a harder target for red-baiting.  We fear

 

what we can’t see, and see

what we fear.
