The Caged Bird

Today, gonna put off

the whole world.

Let it sweat

before it shines.

Take my money

to the central bank -

write my kids

a check,

buy myself

a drink.

Go home,

stare listlessly

at the summer passing,

the caged bird

singing

from the mezzanine

the slow dance

of time,

shaking

my speakers…

Tonight,

the planet

heaves

a hot sigh,

as another

neoliberal

president

signs

an oil contract…

demagoguing

our dreams,

like brandishing

color

from turpentine.

The blue sky

thinning,

parents

getting old,

children

growing up,

singing:

as long

as there is

hunger

there will be

love.
