From an Airplane Somewhere Over the Midwest

Eventually the luminous veins
of the city give way to
the fertile dark of earth and
sky. The sun has already
punctured the tenuous
membrane of the horizon,
spilling the black ink it held
and blotting out all boundaries.
Somewhere in this sea of sky
were mountains, once-
ancient mighty mountains-
but they have been swallowed
by the spreading night.

I, too, am being swallowed
by this primeval void
that makes of all things one.
