Elsewhere: Desert

Desert, a place that is a verb,

a going, a nothingness, a can’t

believe there’s life out here,

way out here, out where

there are no insides, just out-

sides of plants all dry and faded,

“We worship the sun, everyone

can see that.” Out here, a human

is the most permeable thing alive.

Skin over mostly water. Walking,

squinting to hold it all in.

Carcass, cactus, chameleon: what stays.
