The English know how to name it,
if the cow stays in or the cow stays out.
A special hedge to do it is called a haha.
I have a desk in my study much the same,
overflowing with shrubs of paperwork,
vines of clutter,
cards to send/cards I have been given,
bric-a-brac, tchotchkes, native totems,
sacred talismans, books, books, books
and pens; black ink is best.
The cows of doubt crash around my work
all the time making a mess of my heart.
Some days everything gets through,
some days nothing gets out.
My cat died today, a great cat, Alice Zartman,
tortoise shell calico American shorthair goddess,
full of love and we loved her.
She could claw her way through anything,
which was annoying, but she was someone I could count on.
The other cats are prima donnas, like us.
She would find her stuffed mouse and bring it
to me, making a yeowl and a barking.
And I would say, “You are such a good girl.”
She cleaned the others’ ears gently, thoroughly.
I pray to thank the Earth for my companion friend
who lived from March 1, 2007 to December 23, 2019.
Those are the facts. That is to say,
she lived from here to here.
She had a chair next to my desk,
the blanket covered in her hair.
I can’t get over it.
