A TRIP DOWN THE SEWER IN A GLASS-BOTTOM BOAT

i.

i am
an odd potato
proportioned
and distorted
so that
my nature entire
isn’t visible
immediately, breeding
hatred internal
and contempt
external
(the body
gives not a damn
for truth
in advertising).
apple, pear, or apocalypse,
Reubens would recoil
at fickle figure,
mashed metabolism.

ii.
opinion-maker
Bernays pried
pirate-like in
many pies,
no programming
possible without
a seminal
conspiratorial
figure: tortured
tutorial, an omission
is not exactly a lie
so there is no perjury
(until the bystander is pressed:
action could have
been possible, that
implicating subjunctive).

iii.
no one likes
bad news
but people
always want to hear
something new,
like news—
they’re willing
to take
that risk
with other
people’s lives

iv.
laws and sausages
being equal,
an animal-rights pamphlet
warning about how
slaughterhouses
should be made of glass
but our sensibilities
can’t take it
…there’s also
no glass
in Washington.

v.
we save
the truth,
what resonates
but i also keep
as keepsakes
some lies
–at least because
i wasn’t cool
with myself,
i wanted to resemble
a myth. that
made me more
comfortable. growing
into myself is
the largest challenge
of my life: deciding
what to retain
in a crisis self
whittled (or
perhaps more strongly)
distilled.
