blood in the water

cutting to the core
something i’m not overly
good at or
comfortable with. experience
provides shortcuts
after pain, but still
there’s guilt about
trading in those favors—
letting the selective eye
do its ruthless work
and not mourn for low-likelies,
i know the shadows that are
and the darkness to come.
dowry of foreboding:
swapped intimacy
for inertia (to spare casualties).
float ennui on the big board, see
where it cashes in at
the end of the day. i betray
to be rid: not the evil
itself, but the consequence.
