A Prince Makes his Choice

I walked past the walrus ivory

chessmen

and the deer bone

My tutors

sat complaining about the hour

but none of the ladies

had killed the king yet

The courtiers were

beginning to doze off

I settled at the table

opposite a girl

hooded and quick

The rock crystal chessmen

moved like magic

in her butterball hands
