Pretty White Throat (hand-me-down)

spadeful of soil
uncovered handful
of beads threaded
on nothing
inertia holding the line

picked from the ground
by rough fingered boys
carried home to mothers
whooping imitations of Indians
as they climb the steps

they're old, but they're pretty
so I strung 'em for you
can't get you nothin new
nothin 'cept these hand
me down, found in the ground beads

found in the ground
I guess they belonged to
someone once
but they're for you now mama
will you wear them mama
around your pretty white throat?
